Chapter Thirteen
âHow was your day, grandson?â Gram was sitting in one of the two chairs on her front porch. The bag I arrived with was packed with my clothes and waiting for me.
âGood. Well, after Mr. Garcia called and gave us status.â
âIs Rosie doing okay?â The concern in Gramâs voice was unmistakable. She liked Mrs. Garcia. Pretty much everyone who met her did.
âAs good as can be expected,â I sighed, rubbing my hand through my hair. I couldnât show how I felt to the Garcia kids, not even Abigail. âThe feeling I get is that if they had room in the ICU, they would probably have put her there, but she is still breathing on her own.â
âThatâs good news.â
âYes, it is,â I agreed, hating to think how Abby would react if that changed for the worse. Thatâs when I noticed something on top of my bag. It was dinner. I wanted to tell Gram that she didnât need to make our food, but I was sure it wouldnât go over well, so instead, I said, âI missed cooking with you.â
âI missed the help,â she admitted. âBut more for the company than anything else.â
âIâm sorry to leave you aloneâ¦â
âDonât be ridiculous.â Gram didnât give me a chance to finish. âWhat choice did you have? Abigail and her family needed you. Besides, I donât mind being by myself.â There was that no-nonsense voice of hers again, the one that brooked no arguments.
Over the last few weeks, Iâd learned that at least part of it was her way of protecting her heart. My grandmother was a strong woman who didnât suffer fools and liked to control her little piece of the world, but that didnât mean she didnât have a big heart. Gram cared. She cared a lot despite the way she talked.
âI admit,â she continued, surprising me as her tone softened slightly. âIt was nice to have someone in the kitchen with me. That hasnât happened since your aunt left home.â A moment later, she was back to her normal terseness. âBut itâs not like you donât have your own life to live.â
âWell, donât expect to get rid of me that easily.â Iâd come to stay here in part because I loved my grandmother and worried about her, but if I were honest, Gramâs house felt far more like home to me.
The fact that Iâd gotten a chance to know her better over these last few weeks only made that more authentic and more prominent. Gram was a force of nature, but she was also a rock. I never felt as grounded as I did when I was with her.
âIâll be visiting a lot more often once this pandemic is over. We still have plenty of recipes in your motherâs recipe box we need to make.â Iâd already taken pictures of every single one of them, but that was beside the point. The thought of taking the time to cook each with Gram felt right. âAnd making them with you is a
